(٣) وقد اختلف الناس في الكلام في العناصر، فمنهم من قال إنّ العنصر واحد، ومنهم من قال إنّ العنصر أكثر من واحد، والذين قالوا إنّ العنصر واحد منهم من قال إنّه غير متحرّك ومنهم من قال إنّه متحرّك، والذين قالوا إنّه غير متحرّك منهم من قال إنّه متناهٍ بمنزلة قول بارمانيدس، ومنهم من قال إنّه غير متناهٍ بمنزلة قول مالسيس، وأمّا الذين قالوا إنّه متحرّك فمنهم من قال إنّ هذا العنصر الواحد الماء، وممّن قال ذلك ثالس وإيبن، ومنهم من قال إنّه الهواء، وممّن قال ذلك أنكسيمانس وديوجانس، ومنهم من قال إنّه النار، وممّن قال ذلك إيراقلطيس وإيباسس، ومنهم من قال إنّه الأرض، وممّن قال ذلك كسانوفانس، فأمّا الذين قالوا إنّ العناصر كثيرة، فمنهم من قال إنّها متناهية العدد، ومنهم من قال إنّه لا نهاية لعددها والذين قالوا إنّها متناهية العدد منهم
